Club Love: Mystery Associate of Belltown's Les Amis Calls Messenger Article "Racist"

by Oswald Hoffman

A Mystery Rasta Dude called the Messenger office wanting to refute last month's expose on reggae club Les Amis (Belltown Club Takes Off Like A Lead Balloon, December 2004). The dude would not give his name, but promised to write a letter to the editor, which we had still not received at press time.

"The Seattle racist police are out to get us. Your article is untrue, mon. It's because the reggae community is largely black, mon. We're all about the love," according to the caller. We also heard from Boulder, Col. music industry king Mike Hamill. "Those reggae guys are usually notorious scammers. And (Les Amis co-conspirator) Jean Baptise had to pay cash up front whenever I worked with him, too. Ask Chad at the Showbox cause he's got some Baptise horror stories, too. We all do," said Hamill.

But we're not going to call Chad. In fact, barring any major developments, we're gonna leave poor ol' Jean Baptise alone. His alleged transgressions pale in comparison with the amazing stories coming out of Belltown's Club Medusa, currently one of Seattle's worst liquor law offenders. You know the story - an off-duty cop (John Powers) has been suspended by the SPD, accused of overlooking underage drinking, drugs and prostitution while working as a bouncer there and at other Belltown hotspots...that kind of stuff. According to The Seattle Times, which is suddenly all over the Medusa story, manager Ted Rodemeyer said, "The club doesn't tolerate illegal behavior and is working with officials to solve problems." Belltown residents will be looking forward to a quick and effective resolution.
